Published 08.02.2010 12:38:04 by John Bradbury
Argentina has launched a protest against the start of drilling in the waters off the Falklands Islands which has been rejected by the Island's government.Argentina's Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana launched the protest against the start of new offshore oil exploration which was addressed to the acting British ambassador in the Falkland Islands. But the Falkland Island's Director of Minerals, Phyl Rendell, doesn't believe that the issue concerns the Falkland Islands oil industry, ,media reports from the South Atlantic islands said. Britain and Argentina fought a brief and bloody war over the possession of the Islands between May and June 1982 when British forces defeated an much larger occupying army from Argentina. Dispute over the sovereignty of the Islands has continued since, but with new wells about to be drilled of the north of the Islands by Desire Petroleum, Rockhopper Exploration and possibly by BHP Billiton using the Ocean Guardian semi-submersible, the conflict over the Islands' sovereignty and its oil potential which could be confirmed by new drilling, has been brought back into focus. ![]() No single cause for Macondo accidentBP says no single factor caused the accident on the Deepwater Horizon rig in the US Gulf of Mexico in April. ![]() Valiant racks up profitNorth Sea operator Valiant Petroleum racked up US $64.5 m of revenue in the first half this year and pulled in higher pre-tax profits.
