Subsea connector for Wave Hub
Published 04.02.2010 16:13:10 by John Bradbury
Aberdeen-based contractor Hydro Group has landed a deal to supply a subsea connector for the Wave Hub renewable energy centre which is being developed off the UK South-west coast.Hydro Group has landed a deal worth £500,00 to provide a connector which will hook up wave or tidal power generation units to an armoured subsea cable which will carry generated electricity back to shore. Currently the connector is rated to carry 12 kilovolts (kV) but production development will see the operating range of the connected extended to 33 kV, Hydro Group says. “Marine renewables are a key focus for the company, not only in the UK, but also internationally as other country’s governments commit considerable financial support to their own energy strategies,” said Doug Whyte, managing director of Hydro Group. The deal was awarded by JDR Cable Systems which is collaborating on the Wave Hub in partnership with the project's main sponsor, the South West Regional Development Agency, which is funding the development along with the European Regional Development Fund. Wave Hub is being developed to provide a test bed for a range of marine energy devices, 16 km (10 miles) offshore from the Cornwall coast, in a water depth of 50 metres (164 ft). Recently the SWRDA re-advertised for contractors to re-bid for the installation of cabling for Wave Hub, as offshore247.com recently reported.
