GGOWL piles are going in
Published 03.02.2010 08:48:56 by John Bradbury
Scottish and Southern Energy reports that it is half way through the installation of foundations for its £650 million Greater Gabbard wind farm off the UK coast. The project, with generating capacity of 500 Megawatts, using 140 turbines using 3.6 MW turbines supplied by Siewhich and is being developed by Greater Gabbard Offshore Winds Limited (GGOWL) - a joint venture between SSE and RWE npower renewables - now has 69 of the 140 monopile foundations installed. And the first of two offshore platform which will act as offshore transformer stations for the project off the UK south east coast near Ipswich is also now in place, SSE said today in an interim statement. But the project has not been without issues: SSE admitted today there were initial problems commencing the installation process and: “GGOWL has received a claim for additional costs relating to foundation monopiles which it expects to resolve satisfactorily as part of the normal contractual process.” Commissioning of the first transformer station is underway and GGOWL expects to start installing turbines in the next few months and it predicts that the wind farm will have a 40% load factor, producing up to 1,9000 Gigawatt hours of electricity, and will require a total investment of £650 m, excluding grid connection costs. “The development remains on course to be completed in 2012,” SSE stated, adding: “In December 2009, the UK government announced that two Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs) will be earned by the output of all offshore wind projects accredited between April 2010 and March 2014.” ![]() No single cause for Macondo accidentBP says no single factor caused the accident on the Deepwater Horizon rig in the US Gulf of Mexico in April. ![]() Valiant racks up profitNorth Sea operator Valiant Petroleum racked up US $64.5 m of revenue in the first half this year and pulled in higher pre-tax profits.
